We’re bound by ourselves
Our inability to socialize
Hoping it isn’t so
A constant reprise

Repeat repeat repeat
Unable to act
In the same situations
Wanting easily to attract

Pain isn’t the same
As respect or freezing
It comes out at times
Blocks opportunity-seizing

Instead we freeze and fall back
To the classic writer’s block
Grab it, take it, share it
With a new flock

Author’s note:

‘Generation’ is about how technology overtakes our lives and makes us more closed people. We would rather spend time on our phones while with other people instead of seeing what’s in front of us.

The gray between the black and white

Sometimes I feel bipolar
without any middle ground
it’s either all in or fold
Trapped in my mind, I feel bound.

Is it me or do people relate
either LOL’ing or crying weekly
every Wednesday is both
I try to find sense in acting weakly

Whether the argued reasons are
alcohol, childhood, or inevitability
it all returns to self-pity
Especially when I try to be witty

I try not to be the ordinary man
but the simple man
No one’s shown me how to act

The inner fight of blame
it’s hard to see behind the black and white
inner control of honor and shame
Looking ahead things are gray, at least I hope they might

Author’s note:

‘The gray between the black and white’ was a piece I wrote during a time where I had extreme mood swings. I could go from having the best time with my friends to being completely down and depressed in a blink of an eye. For a long time I couldn’t figure out what caused these ‘demons’, as I liked to call them, to come out. After a great amount of self-reflection they don’t come out as often and when they do I’ve become much better at handling it. Accepting that you have issues is important and talking to your friends about it helps as well.

Open your eyes and see a thousand times better than through any screen
No matter the amount of pixels, true beauty it will come between
FOMO, is the new black
Everyone’s clothing is on track

We think it’s smart and functional,
And that our need to check it is optional
A fun addiction that came out of nowhere like a game
If we keep at it we’ll lose friends but might gain short term fame

Why is this disease spreading everywhere
Even the haters take a peek here and there
Sadly it is not short but most their lives
With time everyone’s hope dies

In the end we’re all alone,
Just arrived home, first thing I do is look at my phone
Before I wasn’t there and now you aren’t
Before I was unsure now it’s apparent

Author’s note:

‘Open’ is about how many live through their phones in todays society. I wrote this in a moment of self-reflection of always being conscious of my phone use and the need to use it.
